When we think about widows, orphans, immigrants, minorities, and the poor, we fall into the trap of thinking they just need money. Since we have a welfare system, we tend to sit back and expect the government to take care of the problem. Exodus 22 reveals Yahweh’s heart concerning those who are vulnerable. Yahweh strongly warned the Israelites not to oppress nor take advantage of widows, orphans, strangers, and the poor. In other words, they were to be protected. Likewise, James 1 does not merely command us to provide for widows and orphans, it commands us to visit them when they are in distress. We need to help them in non-monetary ways.
