Many churches and Christians bend over backwards to make Christianity appealing to the unchurched. Exodus 20 reminds us we should do the opposite. After the Israelites left Egypt, Yahweh brought them to Mt. Sinai and gave them the Ten Commandments. Yahweh required sole obedience to Himself and imposed rules and demands on the Israelites. The Israelites had to conform to Yahweh. Likewise, the New Testament teaches us to deny ourselves and follow Jesus. We need to conform to Jesus and the Bible, not the other way around. When we make the church conform to the unchurched, we give the unchurched a false understanding of what it means to become a Christian. The unchurched need to conform to Jesus, not vice versa.
